Evaluating ecosystem functioning of a long-term dumping site in the Bay of Seine (English Channel) ArchiMer
Raoux, Aurore; Baux, Noémie; Pezy, Jean-philippe; Balay, Pierre; Lesourd, Sandric; Dauvin, Jean-claude.
The impact of 70 years of dumping harbour dredged material on ecosystem functioning was compared to a control site (non-impacted zone). A combination of indices (Shannon-Wiener diversity, Pielou evenness, BO2A, AMBI benthic indices) and modelling (Ecopath models) generated Ecological Network Analysis indices were used to detect the dumping operations effects. ENA indices showed that dumping operations appear to have a relatively limited impact on the structure and flow pattern of the local food web. In fact, only small variations between the two sites are revealed by a comparison of ENA indices between the impacted and non-impacted zone. This result could be explained by the fact that the Bay of Seine is historically characterized by a high level of human...

Intratidal and Subtidal Circulation in a Tropical Estuary during Wet Season: The Maroni, French Guiana ArchiMer
Ross, Lauren; Sottolichio, Aldo; Maury, Tanguy; Lesourd, Sandric; Gardel, Antoine.
Observations of water level, current velocity, river discharge, wind and salinity were collected in the Maroni estuary, on the border of French Guiana and Suriname during the wet season of 2018 to explore subtidal circulation patterns. Measurements are complimented by the application of analytical models with an aim to diagnose forcing mechanisms responsible for producing subtidal flows during the day of data collection and to extrapolate these findings to other time periods with variable wind and river forcing. Subtidal along-channel flows were found to be dominated by river discharge, with seaward directed velocities found throughout the channel section reaching 40 cm s −1 . This pattern was altered with strong southwesterly winds, which produced and...

The intra-annual variability of soft-bottom macrobenthos abundance patterns in the North Channel of the Seine estuary ArchiMer
Desroy, Nicolas; Janson, Anne-laure; Denis, Lionel; Charrier, Gregory; Lesourd, Sandric; Dauvin, Jean-claude.
Temporal and spatial variability of the Abra alba–Pectinaria koreni and Macoma balthica communities was examined in the northern part of the Seine estuary (North Channel) over different space and time scales in order to assess the role that the hydrologic regime and/or anthropogenic influences play in defining benthic communities over time. Sediment in the North Channel displayed strong spatial and temporal variability, sustained by intense sediment transport episodes. Total macrobenthic abundances ranged widely on the course of the year and there was no evidence of a seasonal signal for the density fluctuations, whatever the spatial scale considered. The bio-sedimentary dynamics can be divided into two periods: the first corresponds to the high flow rate...
